2-Component PU Foam Set

Fine-pore polyurethane foam for lightweight 3-dimensional prosthetic effects. 2-Component PU Cold Foam is a 2 component foam that expands to 5 to 6 times its original volume.

The product consists of two components:
500 ml component A
250 ml component B

Please read the instructions carefully before using the products.

Directions

Storage and appearance:
Store all components in a dry, dark place. Component B is particularly sensitive to humidity.

  • Component A is a creamy, whitish liquid
  • Component B is a liquid, amber-colored liquid

1. Preparing the work area
The best working temperature is between 20°C and 23°C (68°F and 73°F). High humidity can impair the formation of the foam. Avoid processing the product in a damp environment. All moulded parts and tools must be completely dry.
In addition to the cold foam, you will need:

  • a wax-based release agent, e.g. Art. 08046/00 Wax-based Release Agent
  • Soft bristle brush for applying the release agent
  • Disposable paper cup or similar container, large enough to hold both components
  • Scales with an accuracy of 1 g or finer
  • Alcohol for cleaning the moulds
  • Stirring sticks or stirring rods for single use
  • Screw clamps or heavy weights of a suitable size to weigh down the mould
  • Loose powder, such as talcum powder, starch or Art. 05700/00 Translucent Powder
  • A small, soft brush

You can color the foam as desired using dry pigment powders. To do this, stir the pigment very carefully into component B. The hardened foam will differ from the original color. Therefore, carry out color tests.

2. Preparing the moulds
You can use hard plaster or dental stone, synthetic resins and reinforced silicone moulds (silicone matrix moulds) to create Cold Foam. Make sure there are sufficient overflow channels through which the expanding foam can escape. Otherwise, you risk breaking the moulds during the foaming process. All mould parts must be clean, grease-free and very dry before applying the release agent.
Apply a generous amount of release agent to the moulds. Use a soft brush to ensure that all surfaces and details are thoroughly coated. Work the drying release agent into the surfaces with the brush. You can use a hair dryer or hot air gun to speed up the process. Observe the safety regulations for the release agent with regard to heat, hot wires and personal safety.

3. Preparing for foaming
Check again that all mould parts are clean, treated with release agent and completely dry. Any moisture on the moulds can affect the quality of the finished foam.
If necessary, cover your work area with plastic sheeting or paper to protect sensitive surfaces. Place the lower mould on a flat, secure work surface. Place the upper mould and the screw clamps or the weight within easy reach.
Weigh the desired quantities of components A and B into the disposable containers.

Mixing ratio:
2 parts A to 1 part B (by weight, NOT by volume)
A:B = 2:1, e.g. component A = 40 g, component B = 20 g

4. Foaming
1) Mix both components very carefully but quickly with a beating motion for approx. 5 seconds or until the mixture changes color and increases in volume. Do not use an electric mixer.
2) Pour the entire mixture into the deepest part of the lower negative mould.
3) Take the upper positive mould and place it on the lower mould with a smooth movement. Avoid catching the moulds or adjusting the closed mould. 4) Use screw clamps or a heavy weight to press both mould parts firmly together.

The foam expands to approximately 6 times its original volume. If in doubt, mix a larger quantity to ensure even pressure development in the mould and good moulding of the negative. The foam takes 5 to 10 minutes to harden. The thinner the wall thickness of the finished foam parts, the longer the reaction takes. If in doubt, it is better to wait a little longer; this will not affect the result.

5. Removing the foam piece from the mould
1) Open both mould parts very slowly and gently. If necessary, pry the parts apart
2) Dust the surface of the foam part with any powder
3) If the finished foam part sticks to the mould parts, carefully remove it from the mould with a small, soft brush and powder
4) Remove excess foam from the foam part

Allow the fresh foam parts to air dry for at least 24 hours before use. Store the air-dried parts in a dry, dark place, preferably in an airtight container.

Pro Tip

1. You can encapsulate the Cold Foam appliance with Syncap. To do this, coat both mould parts with a very thin layer of Syncap. Use a cotton swab or airbrush the desired area of the mould generously with a mixture of 1 part Syncap and 7 parts acetone. Cover all mould parts that could come into contact with the foam on both sides. Observe the hazard warnings an occupational health and safety measures for all materials.

2. The product works within a range of A:B 100:32 - 100:52. The properties of the foam change with reduced addition of component B.

It is essential to maintain this range to ensure that the ingredients react completely.
